A lesson in sharing

Well, today the boys had their first lesson in sharing. Kaden has been out from under the bili-light while Braylon still needed it for a while longer, but today Kaden had to use the bili-light while Braylon was free of the light and sunglasses. The nurse said, “They are already learning about sharing.”
Dr. Egger called this morning and said the boys are doing well. Kaden’s biliruben was up so he needed a little more phototherapy. He is almost up to full feeds so his IV will be coming out today. He has decided to leave him on c-pap for a while longer because Kaden looks comfortable and the c-pap has been shown to help with lung development. He gave the nurses the okay to let me hold him while he is on c-pap. I was so happy to hear this. He is probably tired of hearing me ask and finally just gave in.
Braylon has been started on vitamin B, which the nurse said is very common for preemies. She said the babies will probably go home on some type of multivitamin. I was able to hold him again during the boys’ noon care time. He spit up just a tiny bit on my chest but I didn’t mind. He seems to really love his time with mommy and just relaxes while I hold him. I love it because I can feel his little fingers tickling my skin and smell his little baby breath. I rest my chin or cheek on his little head so I can feel his soft hair on my face. The nurses always close the curtain and turn down the lights and it is just our time. I can’t wait to start this with Kaden. I get to hold him today during their 4pm care times. I hope he tolerates it well so we can have our special time on a daily basis. I think he will really benefit from mommy time.
While Braylon seems to be the more relaxed child, Kaden is starting to show what a fighter he is. Today while I was pumping on his half of the room, I could hear him yelling from inside his little incubator. I could tell it was cries of frustration. Although, I hate to hear them cry it is a reassuring sound since it is really the only exercise they get and it is good for their lungs. I managed to maneuver over to his bed with my plastic booby tassels, as Bryan calls them, still attached. I stuck my hand through one of the little holes and held his hand. He let out a few more angry squeaks and then finally calmed back down. Bryan and I learned in one of our prenatal classes that babies who get at least one hour of skin-to-skin per day are calmer more relaxed babies. I think Kaden will relax after he gets his chance to lie on mommy’s chest.
My parents and grandma are on their way up for the weekend and I am so excited to see them. It will be nice to have their company while Bryan is still in Lewiston working until tomorrow evening. Someone will be staying with me at the RMH while the other and my grandma stay at my aunt’s house with the dogs. I am excited to see Angus and Izzy this evening too. I am curious to see how interested they are in the baby smells that are probably on my clothes.
I am hoping to get more pictures up soon. It is a little hard for me to get good pictures that don’t all look the same when I am by myself but now with my parents on their way I should be able to get more.

  2. They still sound like they are doing awesome!! I might be swinging by tomorrow real quick if you don't mind. I know you will have family there but I'll call before if I stop by. Hang in there!! All the nurses use to say to me, they don't go to Kindergarten in here.

  3. Ashley, we are so thankful that you're taking the time to describe your time with those wonderful boys. GGrandma Betty gets so pleased when she sees how well you're doing with them. She's from the 'old school' where babies ruled and everybody had a half dozen or so and a family gathering always had at least 6 or 8 babies in attendance. She says that you're a perfect mother, she likes everything about the way you're doing it. She just wishes that she could roll back the clock and show you and the boys off at one of those distant family gatherings of long ago.

The photos of the boys with their eyes open were simply wonderful - it's no wonder why you want so much 'skin' time with them!!

If you ever get a quiet time we sure want to get back up there.
